Talk:How to name your Mod
From GECK
Therealneraverine:
I think its unfair to say that this page has 'errors'. It is correct to say that it is incomplete but anything said so far is valid.
- I was wondering the same thing when I say it pop up under pages needing attention

- My bad. I was looking specifically at the crash note at the bottom which doesn't seem to be true for me, and can therefore be misleading. Was going to change it after I checked, and probably still will.

- Okay, I spruced up the formatting, and clarified that the crash does not occur for everyone.

- No objections there. Since it was my first article on the Wiki I was counting on someone else to brush up its finese.
Concerning the Crashes
"I found the problem; a dialog pops up for confirmation but it is hidden by the other G.E.C.K. windows. The solution is to move and resize all the G.E.C.K. windows (including the main window) so that you can see the center of your desktop. Then the dialog will be visible." from Xyx0r on Bethesda Forums.

- Are we sure he's talking about the same thing? When I open the GECK and click the load button, a window pops up with all the files. If I go to my .esp and type in a new name for the author, that's all I have to do. Clicking anything else after that saves the change. Never does a confirmation window pop up. If you have a link to the post feel free to post that and I'll try to find out more.

- I think this problem may be related to plugins created before the GECK. I never ran into the problem, UNTIL I tried naming a plugin made without the GECK, in which case the box popped up behind the window. Pressing space twice cleared it, and the GECK did not crash. If people run into this, try moving the Data Files window before editing the Name, which should allow the window to show up properly and we can see what the message is.

- I've seen a message box a few times when loading plugins made with FO3Edit (I don't think I necessarily had to change author name). I just loaded up a plugin so that I could copy/paste the error here:
Form counts don't match. File = SurgeonsRifle.esp Forms loaded = 10 Forms in file = 4 Do you want to correct the file header? Yes No
- Obviously this will be slightly different for different data files. It seems that no matter which button I press, the GECK won't crash for me.

- Did the message pop up on loading the plugin or changing the name in the Data Files window? It may be the same message, I just want to confirm.
- And yes, the crash part may have to do with system set up. My F3 is installed under 'C:/Games' because I didn't feel like dealing with any Vista protected /Program Files/ nonsense.
- --Quetzilla 02:14, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- It popped up when the GECK tried to load the plugin (i.e. after it finished loading Fallout3.esm). I tried just editing the Author information of pre-GECK data files but I didn't get any warnings until I tried to load them. I'm running Vista, with Fallout 3 installed in Program Files but I've disabled all that nonsense about permissions so I tend not to have any issues.

- If the message didn't show up on editing the author field, it's probably not the same bug. I haven't been able to recreate the bug, as the one mod that caused the problem no longer does after having used the space bar to click past the hidden window.

- In Vista, with the game installed to C:\Games\ and attempting to rename via method listed here, Vista pops up a 'File in Use by User' dialog listing Data\MyMod.esp as the file in question. This dialog is generally hidden behind the Open Data dialog, unless it is moved before editing the mod's name. No way to get around it other than to hit Cancel/Space twice and then dismiss a GECK error message about the access denied error on that file, followed by an Abort/Retry/Ignore dialog. Haven't figured out what program is accessing the file (Data\MyMod.esp), other than the GECK itself. Could be something on Vista (indexing, etc)?

- Update / Fix: Right clicking on the icon for the GECK and selecting "Run as Administrator" solved my problem.

- The first and only time I edited the publishers data for a personal plugin file resulted in a slightly daunting lag and no response status (in comparison to the normal lags I get); it resulted in normal functionality, complete with the changes. I run Vista 32-bit.

- We spent days trying to figure out what was going on with not being able to change the author's name, and other little things that should be simple. We didn't have crashes, but we had lots of errors and stuff just not doing as commanded. Your little note at the bottom of the page somehow reminded us about the "administrator privligages" on our system. Sometimes the simplest things make a huge difference. Feeling slightly stupid now, but things are running smoother!
- Just for reference, I think I've found some of the issues for the top issue, with the window appearing behind the others. It's just complaining that the mod is already in-use. Instead of loading the mod and then changing the data, just hit the Data button when first opening GECK and then change the relevant information. You don't need to necessarily load the mod itself.
