Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: So, what is xNVSE?
  • A: xNVSE is an updated version of NVSE, created and maintained by a team of dedicated New Vegas modders. The project started in 2020 after a long period of radio silence from the original NVSE team. The decision to create our own fork was motivated by the fact that several game-breaking bugs in original NVSE were discovered, so we reached out to the original team and they gave us their permission to take over the project. Since then, we continued polishing and updating the codebase, fixing many undiscovered bugs and adding new features.
  • Q: What advantages does xNVSE have over NVSE?
  • A: Significantly better performance for script-heavy mods due to a newer C++ toolset and many code optimizations, faster saving and loading due to a rewritten cosave algorithm, tons of bugfixes, new features for plugin developers.
  • Q: Are old mods/plugins still compatible?
  • A: Yes. We keep a focus on backwards compatibility with precedent mods and plugins. Despite that an update may introduce unintended errors that we will try to rectify as soon as possible.
  • Q: What are the changes for the latest update?
  • A: They are listed on the Github download page linked above.
  • Q: Will you merge JIP LN and other plugins in xNVSE?
  • A: We aren't planning to in foreseeable future.
  • Q: Can I update NVSE mid play-through?
  • A: Yes, and you are encouraged to do so.
  • Q: My antivirus says there's a virus in nvse_loader.exe, what's that about?
  • A: That's a false positive. We already contacted Microsoft about it but it will likely happen again in the future, so you need to add the file to exclusions of your AV.
  • Q: Do I need to uninstall previous version of NVSE to update?
  • A: No, just overwrite it with new version by extracting the archive to New Vegas directory.
